Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon – Introducing Karen Campbell

Karen Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com.) I would like to introduce you to Karen Campbell, one of the Conversation Leaders for this event.

As a teenager, Karen began using Tarot in 1961. She describes it as a “teen age rebellion” type of thing. She got serious in the early 80’s and took classes from Christine Payne Towler and then began reading for others. She was a reader at Womyn Spirit Continuum, has participated in the “Pathways to Transformation” in Yachats for the past 17 years and last year had a tent at the Shrewsbury Faire. Since retiring from her work as a prison guard at the Oregon State Penitentiary in 2010, she has increased her involvement in fairs and events.

Karen is a SoulCollage® facilitator, a Reiki and Alchemical Healing® practitioner, and offers workshops in Journal reading and writing. She is ordained with the Church of Universal Love and performs special ceremonies. She describes her work with Tarot cards as Spirit Guided Counseling.

The subject that Karen will be bringing for discussion is the use of Tarot and Journal writing to further your personal and professional goals. She will use her own goal of having peaceful personal relationships as a kick starter to the exploration. Journaling with the Tarot can take many creative and purposeful paths. It is hoped that you will bring innovative techniques to share and Karen will too.

jadzia_deforest_tarot

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com.) I would like to introduce you to Jadzia DeForest, one of the Conversation Leaders for this event.

Jadzia DeForest is a Tarot reader, instructor, and author residing is Portland, Oregon. Her approach to Tarot is practical and positive; working with divination as a tool for self discovery. She is also the director of a group of dedicated Cartomancy enthusiasts who are putting on the Northwest Tarot Symposium (NWTS) in Portland in March of 2015.

How do you see the traditional meanings in the Tarot carry forward to our high-tech, fast-paced society? With her, you’ll explore this question and more. The conversation will revolve around modern imagery decks, how as a reader you may apply updated card meanings, and what does the modern Tarot look like in a world that doesn’t have Pages or Knights.

You can find Jadzia online at several locations. Learn about her publications at www.DeveraPublishing.com. For readings, classes, and workshops she’s at www.TarotByJadzia.com. Northwest Tarot Symposium information is at www.NWTarotSymposium.com and on Facebook.

Networking & Tarot Conferences

img024

It is amazing to me how things have changed over the years that I have been connected to the Tarot world through the Internet (way back to 1997). As the Internet expanded, and we all got to know each other better, Tarot gatherings (under many different names) started popping up. They allowed us to meet each other in person, and to share out wisdom through conferences and classes. Many new friendships were forged, and many projects born. Whether you call them conferences, seminars, or by some other name, they are worthwhile venues. They are also expensive. What I would suggest is that at some point in time each year, we each take a look at the conferences/seminars being offered, and decide if we can afford to go, and, if so,  which ones we want to attend.

Just how do we do that … decide which ones we want to attend? I would look at the following:

1. Where is  the venue? East coast … west coast … middle america. Where is it most convenient to travel to.

2. Who are the presenters? Are they offering something of value that you want to learn?

3. Is there going to be a marketplace, where books and decks are being offered for sale? If you are an artist or an author, how much would it cost you to present your product?

4. Is there a discount for accomodations in connection with the conference/seminar? Are there reasonably priced accomodations nearby?

5. When is the event taking place? Does it fit into your schedule.

There are three events that I am going to talk about in this blog. There are many more, but these are the ones t hat I know about. The first one is the Reader’s Studio, founded by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone of The Tarot School. It takes place in April, in New York City. I have attended several times, and was always happy that I did. More information on The Reader’s Studio can be found here. They SOLD OUT for 2014! How amazing is that!

A unique venue is being offered for the first time in November of this year. Founder Toni Gilbert is hosting the Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon iat Brietenbush  Hotsprings, Detroit, OR. Conversation Leaders for 2014 include Toni Gilbert, Paul Nagy, Isha Lerner, Christine Payne-Towler, Jadzia DeForest, Robert Volkmann, Mary Jo Wevers, Alan Stein, and Cynthia Giles. There is an open group page on Facebook where everyone is free to ask questions and comment.

Another unique venue, the Northwest Tarot Symposium, is being offered for the first time  in March of 2015, in Portland,OR. Hosted by Jadzia and Jay DeForest, founders of Devera Publishing, the symposium will focus on Tarot, Lenormand, Oracle, and Cartomancy. More information can be found here.

I do not often make major errors … but in this blog, I did. If you are reading this now, you are reading corrected copy. The initial blog presented three Tarot venues, not four. And the venue that was unintentionally left out has been a MAJOR presence on the west coast for twenty-three years. My apologies to Thalassa, and the Daughters of Divination, for neglecting to present their information! Great effort goes into this symposium every year, and they certainly deserve recognition. And as readers of this column, you deserve to know about them!  Hosted by Thalassa and the DoD, BATS (the Bay Area Tarot Symposium), it will be taking place in August of this year in San Jose, CA. There is always mischief and mayhem at BATS … check it out! They can also be found on Facebook.

These are just four of many venues being offered to network and share Tarot, astrology, and other oracle wisdom. They are a wonderful way to meet people, network, and ck up some valuable tips!

Note: The Emperor is from the Magdalene Legacy Tarot, Casey DuHamel and Deborah L. Shutek-Jackson, Grail Quest Press, 2014.

Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon – Introducing Christine Payne-Towler

Christine Payne-Towler 2

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com.) I would like to introduce you to Christine Payne-Towler, one of the Conversation Leaders for this event.

As a Conversation Leader, Christine will be focusing on Ancient Astrology. Here is a taste of what to expect from Christine!

“All of the Oracles of Western culture rest in the matrix of astrology one way or another. Sometimes they borrow the basic ingredients of the astrological cosmos (planets, signs, seasons or elements), Sometimes they borrow the format of astrology (tabulating their results in house-wheel type charts, or analyzing them according to astrological categories).

Sometimes they are tied up with the letters of the Magical Alphabet, which is inherently astrological as well. Astrology also provides the “container” and motive power for the alchemical Great Work, whether that is conceived as being spagyric, psychological, or spiritual in scope. Therefore it helps Tarot people to have some exposure to the basic aspects of the astrological world-view held by the people among whom Tarot first appeared. Putting these two symbol-sets together has the power to super-charge your readings and Tarot meditations.

Christine will use her own pack made with Michael Dowers, the Tarot of the Holy Light, as well as others that have appeared across the history of Tarot, to illustrate the magical and astral assumptions that govern the progression of the Trumps and the personalities of the minor cards. Those who have their charts with them will be able to see how different decks and systems illustrate their private psyche, and why they might consider choosing their deck based on what it has to say about their chart.

Several decks will be aid out in a Zodiacal manner, so that we can all see what happens when we play with the correspondences that represent different historical stages of Tarot’s development. We will also be able to see how our own charts “pencil out” according to the different systems. What fun!
You can see more of Christine’s work on her site, http://www.tarotarkletters.com/.

Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon March Update

Breitenbush

This year we are going to experience a very special event – Toni Gilbert’s Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon. Time to start making plans to attend! Find out more about the event here. It takes place on November 10th through the 13th, at Breitenbush Hot Springs, high in the Cascade mountains of Oregon.

This event reminds me of Tarot, Art, and Music salons of the not so distant past, where the wealthy gathered to discuss their latest interests. The Salon, according to hostess Toni Gilbert, is a gathering of people to “partly amuse each other, and partly increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation”. There will be conversation on Astrology and Tarot, study and practice with the Tarot cards and with astrological charts.
One or two discussion circles a day will stimulate the intellect, and the rest of the time participants can take care of the body by taking a hike, soaking in hot tubs, enjoying the sauna, or getting a massage. Because of this salon, the participants at Breitenbush can now also get a Tarot or astrology session with some of this generation’s finest spiritual leaders … a balm for the soul.

Everyone benefits from this type of gathering. This interactive event isn’t just for the masters of esoteric studies. You’ll learn from many teachers in an atmosphere of fun. Some teach with higher learning and experience under their belts, some teach by experimentation, and some teach by being the beginner. Bring your mother, your daughter, or your boss. Anyone can join in and glean what they might need and may be searching for Come with an inquisitive mind and by the end of the salon, you will have learned something you can take home and use. An overall healing magic comes with this experience in the deep forests of Breitenbush … you will remember this feeling for a lifetime!

Toni's cabin

Groups will meet in Toni’s cabin, as well as at some of the beautiful spaces at Breitenbush. Conversation Leaders include Toni Gilbert, James Wanless, Isha Lerner, Christine Payne-Towler, Robert Volkman, Paul Nagy, Mary Jo Wevers, Alan Stein, and Arwen Lynch Poe.

Sharing a little secret … personal readings with the well-known intuitives known at the salon as “Conversation Leaders” will be available! A unique chance to deepen your understanding of specific areas with leaders in their field! Shhhhhh!

To find out more information, go to Toni’s site, and click on Workshops. If you would like to attend, print out the application, fill it in, and send it to Toni (the address is on the form). This is an “insurance form”, in that it will reserve a place for you when open registration starts in June.

We hope that you will all join us on this exotic and lovely adventure!

Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon – Paul Nagy

Paul Nagy

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com .) I would like to introduce you to Mr. Paul Nagy, one of the Conversation Leaders for this event.

Paul is a Tarot reader, teacher, and consultant. He offers weekly teleconferences based on specific books. Currently he is conducting an intensive study of the Sacred Rose Tarot (by Johanna Gargulo-Sherman), through her “Guide To the Sacred Rose Tarot”. This may lead to a possible new edition of this book, including more material about the possible significance of the deck. This is open to anyone who wishes to call in and participate. His teaching focus is on intermediate Tarot readers.

Paul’s conversation topic will be Contemplative Tarot as a form of prayer dialogue. Paul sees this as a “true” conversation, in that the topic will act as a springboard for using the Tarot as a tool of reaching towards the divine, and not merely as a form of self-knowledge.

Paul has also been working with Enrique Enriquez reading the Marseille style Tarot. His emphasis here is on looking at the imagery in the cards to see what they depict, and then developing them analogically, metaphorically, and anagogically.

He has just started participating in a Facebook group called The Pips and Trumps, where they take one card from the Minor Arcana, and one card from the Major Arcana, and discuss them using the methods that Enrique follows, as well as the methods that group members may also use individually. Paul has very graciously allowed me to excerpt some of his comments from this group, so that people can see how he reads Tarot for Tarot.

Paul on the card pairing Seven of Swords and Temperance:

“The 7 of Swords Winks at Temperance:

“Ever spill a drop?”

“Only when I sleep on swords,” she quibs.

“Yes rust may well be an issue.”

“Get a grip will you!”

“Who needs a grip? I’ve got wings and a wicked martini!”

“Get my point?”

“I’d rather keep dancing, thank you.”

In Paul’s own words, he reads Tarot by showing the elements in the card to the people he is reading for, and then showing how this element can be metaphored into a number of possibilities that may or may not relate to their question. He usually don’t like to know what a person’s question is until after he has talked to them about the cards.

I have met Paul, and attended a couple of Readers Studios that he was at. He is well spoken, a lot of fun, and filled with a bit of mischief! I think that you will all enjoy meeting him!

Paul’s work can be seen at http://www.tarothermeneutics.com/.

Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon – Robert Volkmann

Robert Volkmann blog pic

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com .) I would like to introduce you to Dr. Robert Volkmann, one of the Conversation Leaders for this event.

Dr. Volkmann trained as a Medical Doctor in Family Practice. For several years his focus was Obstetrics, here he delivered almost 2,000 babies. Following this he did general Family Practice, with an emphasis on counseling. These were generally single visits, but occasionally this involved several visits, or even long term counseling.

Concurrent with Dr. Volkmann’s Medical Practice was his personal practice in Meditation, where he did extensive travelling in the Inner Worlds that was self-healing, educational, and an extensive exploration of the subconscious and some of the higher states of consciousness. Much of his interest in counseling is in helping people become more self-aware, and to give them tools to work with.

His Medical Practice, his daily personal life, and his night life of dreams were all an extension of or complimentary to his Meditation Practice, though it might be said in reverse, his Meditation Practice was a tool to help his Medical Practice …

Dr. Volkmann kept a journal of his dreams and meditations, a journal that started off at about 150 pages a year in 1985, and is closer to 400 pages a year now.

In his own words, he describes himself as “ Being a midwife for the birthing of Love & Consciousness in people via a wide variety of methods and experiences.”

I would like to share a blog that Toni wrote about her journey with Dr. Volkmann – http://tonigilbert.com/blog/2014/01/robert-volkmann-and-me/.

I look forward to Dr. Volkmann’s input in Breitenbush, and thank him for taking the time to be there for this inaugural event. The worlds of both Astrology and Tarot will be opened up to an unimaginable degree. I am already amazed at what is going to happen!

Northwest Astrology & Tarot Salon – Toni Gilbert

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

In November of this year the inaugural Northwest Astrology and Tarot Salon will be held at the Breitenbush Conference Center, near Detroit, OR. (More information about the Salon can be found here – nwsalon.com. ) Founder and Hostess for this event is Toni Gilbert. I have known Toni as an Internet friend for several years. She is an artist, author, editor, transpersonal counselor with a background in holistic nursing. Her written works include many published articles, along with two books –  “Messages From The Archetypes”, 2004, White Cloud Press, and “Gaining Archetypal Vision”, 2011, Schiffer Publishing. Toni was founding director of the Oregon Holistic Nurses Association, and editor for the Alternative Journal of Nursing.

Toni's cabin

Toni has owned a “summer cabin” (yes, the cabin in the photo above!) at Breitenbush (but on National Forest land) for the past twelve years. She discovered Breitenbush in the 70’s”, but became involved with the people and projects there in 1998. In “The Healing Art of Tarot”, Toni writes about the work she did at one of Breitenbush’s annual retreats (http://www.tonigilbert.com/articles/Healing-Art-of-Tarot.pdf). Some of the Salon Conversations will be taking place in Toni’s cabin!

Breitenbush

The subject that Toni will be leading conversations on will be “Gaining Archetypal Vision”. Toni has seen patterns in our world since her twenties beginning with the poetry-music of Bob Dylan, she wondered why he spoke to her so profoundly. Later in her studies, she discovered that Carl Jung also shared this way of perceiving.

With many years of esoteric studies Toni began to explore Tarot cards at age 50. She immediately realized that the cards mirrored her own thoughts, knowing that they were drawing on her own unconscious mind’s contents. With the help of a cosmic synchronicity, she sees the cards as a nighttime dream laid out to be interpreted. She did five years of intense intellectual and experimental study before using them in her alternative nursing practice. She could see that they were the perfect healing art to use with wellness counseling and that nursing would benefit. It was such a good tool that she felt the need to write her first book (“Messages from the Archetypes”), and began to use them in a holistic nursing venue that she termed an alternative nursing practice. Toni has retired her nursing license, but continues to offer her wisdom as a transpersonal counselor using the tools mentioned on her personal web site (www.tonigilbert.com), including guided imagery, energy work, meditation, Tarot Counseling, dream interpretation, essential oils, expressive arts, and mind/body consciousness.

I am so looking forward to in depth conversations on the archetypes, with the unending little turns in the road that this can take us to. Breitenbush is a lovely area, deep in the forest that lends … itself to introspection, and a grounded connection with life. As Hostess, Toni is gifting the Tarot world with an incredible “time warp” of past/present/future. I fully expect to be leaving Breitenbush with a fresh perspective not only of astrology and Tarot, and how they can work together, but of the personal work that I am doing.

A final thought – this is the link to “Astrology, Tarot, and Maslow: Using the Esoteric Arts For Self-Development”, written by Toni, based on work done by Christine Payne-Towler – http://www.tonigilbert.com/articles/AHP-Perspective-JUNE-2011a.pdf,
